The launch of lawyer-politician Meenakshi Lekhi’s debut book was a packed event
L to R: Meenakshi Lekhi, JP Nadda, and co-author Krishna Kumar, at Lekhi’s book launch yesterday.
Meenakshi Lekhi is a firebrand lawyer and a politician. So when this Member of Parliament from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) decided to write a book, fiction at that, it was bound to be no less than a thriller in the making. And the book launch, a packed event, saw people queuing up to listen to what the author and not the politician had to say. The book, New Delhi Conspiracy, published by Harper Collins was released in the Capital by BJP’s National working president JP Nadda.
Though the book was to be launched by Union home minister Amit Shah, who was unable to attend the event due to ill health, Nadda turned into a last-minute saviour and released the book.
“It’s difficult to face an audience who have turned up to see Amitji and what is even more difficult is to do justice to their expectations,” said Nadda, former Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
Applauding Lekhi’s effort in writing the book, Nadda remarked, “The title is inquisitive and makes you want to delve deeper into the subject.”
Commenting on the way times have changed for women writers, Lekhi shared the example of the acclaimed nineteenth-century writer Mary Ann Evans, who had to use the pen name of George Eliiot as women were not allowed to get published. “Women had to undergo a lot of struggle to get their voices heard. But now men too are appreciative about what women write. Times have changed,” she said.
The book is co-written with Krishna Kumar, who works with her, is a tale of how a plan is being hatched to kill the prime minister and the protagonist, a woman politician, attempts to save him. No prizes for guessing if inspiration has been drawn from real life.
